Exponents are large numbers written in simple ways. However, it takes some computing to understand their value. Fifth graders don't have to be threatened by this new concept with these helpful tools on exponents and powers of ten. After learning how exponents function, kids get a sense of how two multiply, divide, add, and subtract exponents, and even experiment with pre-algebra equations.

Powerful Resources on Exponents and Powers of Ten for Fifth Graders

The Learning Library provides an abundance of exponents and powers of ten resources for fifth graders, who are being first introduced to these concepts. Exponents can equate to large numbers, but the idea is easy enough to follow. Exponents are written as bⁿ with b representing the base and the little n representing the exponent. To find the value, the base is multiplied by itself as many times as the exponent. For example, four to the third power is simply four multiplied by itself three times. There is an easy-to-follow worksheet that serves as an introduction to exponents. After that, students can practice breaking down expressions into multiplication problems. As fifth graders advance with exponent practice, there are a few worksheets that serve as pre-algebra practice, too. The lesson plan I Got The Power! is an extensive look at the powers of 10. The lesson explains to students that exponents are a way to simplify writing large numbers. There is also an online exercise that tests students' exponent knowledge with a multiple choice challenge. These exponents and powers of ten resources are complete with a printable workbook and guided lesson.
