Write Nutsy News Stories

What You Need:

  • Old newspapers
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Glue or tape

What You Do:

  1. Give your child a newspaper and have them go through and cut out individual words. Help them cut out a variety of word types, some nouns, some verbs, some adjectives. Explain what each kind of word is as you go—nouns are things, verbs are actions, adjectives are describers.
  2. Put all the cut-up words into a pile.
  3. Demonstrate how you can make up a funny fake “headline” with words pulled from the pile. For example, “Senator Eats Baseball Team.”
  4. Let them pick their own silly headline and glue or tape it to the top of a blank piece of paper.
  5. Have them write a short article (3-4 sentences) to go along with the headline. You can help them come up with ideas by asking questions about who, what, when, where, and why.
  6. Repeat and see how many silly articles they can come up with!

For extra fun, have them get dressed up and pretend to be a news anchor, reading their silly headlines and articles for your whole family to enjoy.
